A classmate was pregnant during one of the semesters in school. She “popped” the weekend before the final examination. (The fact that I received a text saying Alison* popped to convey that she delivered her baby was in itself a shock but that’s besides the point) Obviously, she was in the hospital and could not attend the exams. But overstressing and over thinking, she decided it to be a good idea to leave her newborn in the hospital for a few hours to come to the university to take the test on a wheelchair. Her plans understandably stressed our professor. So he called her, congratulated her, spoke to her, and convinced her that she could take the exam *anytime* she was ready. Her absence would not hinder her progress through the semester.

I have to admit this shocked me. Such flexibility, such respect, such freedom… all for a student? I was so not used to this. You see, in India, my friend who lost her father the morning of midterm exam was forced to come to school drenched in tears just because the principal would not have it any other way. Most women don’t want to endure endless cycles of pregnancy and childbirth, which physically impact poor women the hardest. And in the US, poor women have the worst maternal mortality rates in the Western world to prove it. But when well-off right-wingers voted for lawmakers and presidents that promised their “base” to take away women’s rights to birth control and abortion, and then followed through by defunding all the Planned Parenthood clinics, many clinics across the US had to close. Those clinics were the only way poor women could get any access to reliable birth control. So, after “conscience clause laws” were passed that allows pharmacists to refuse to fill birth control prescriptions and refuse to sell Plan-B because they “morally objected” to it, and after Planned Parenthood got defunded, poor women – especially poor women in rural/semi-rural areas – were left with no access to birth control at all in many parts of the US.
