I had a friend in high school who was a sophomore when I was a freshman, Joe Lipham. You know? Kind of a weird dude, but so was I. I was a TOTAL nerd in high school, took my friends where I could get them. We were in choir together and both did the annual musicals. Anything Goes my junior year, Bye Bye Birdie my senior year. I left home, joined the Marine Corps, traveled the world, lost track of most of the people from high school. Facebook changed that, got me back in touch with a lot of people I really liked. So one day I wondered, huh. Haven’t seen ol’ Joe Lipham here on Facebook, I wonder why? Searched around Facebook, nothing. He works hard day and night to provide for himself as well has his wife. However, he works as a laborer, spending most of his time carrying coal to take to the factory. But due to the lack of a minimum wage, he makes very little money. Enough to survive, but not enough to buy anything apart from the basics. Now remember when I said the Tom was 26 years old? Good, because carrying coal no easy chore- it’s painful, monotonous, and is harmful to your back. Tom can only work as a laborer for so long until his body just can’t take it anymore. What will Tom and his wife do now? They can’t work, they’re uneducated, and they have little savings. Today they have to buy dinner, maybe a loaf of bread. Tomorrow, they splurge a little: buying some kind of soup and cabbage. The day after, they run out of money.

However, it didn’t have to end that way. Maybe if they had children when they were younger, they would have another source of income, namely, their own children. You see, every couple in poverty-stricken countries need at least three people to support them in their ‘retirement’, so when they can’t labor anymore, they have someone else to pay their bills. So hypothetically, if Tom and his wife had three children, their children would act like a sort of financial security. Now you might still be wondering “But how can they (the parents) afford children if they’re already struggling financially?” Well, raising a child isn’t as expensive as you’d think, at least, in third world countries. Also, the children start working at a very young age to help support their family. Having children in these circumstances is a gamble. If you win and your child lives, then you get financial support for life. If you lose and your child dies, then you can always try again. My parents were immigrants from the Philippines. They came here with the intention of working hard to provide for their family—my sister and me, who were born and raised here—and all the things they never had as kids. My dad gave 20yrs for the US Army and another 15 or so for the US Postal Service. My mom worked for the same pharmaceutical company about 20 yrs. Anyway, my sister and I weren’t spoiled. But we had everything we needed and wanted materially. A nice house. Brand name clothing. Cool toys. Anything we wanted. All that was really asked of us two were: get good grades; obey our parents. As an adult, I believe my parents really thought that they gave us everything, including every opportunity to succeed.
